The American group is derived from the similar British Oddfellows service organizations which came into being during the 18th century.
Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), also known as the Three Link Fraternity stood for Friendship, Love and Truth. Elgin, Illinois, Hampton and other American Watch companies made watches with dials and sometimes skeletonized movements similar to Dudley. Waltham also made several Masonic watches, in both open and hunter cases with painted porcelain dials. The best known Masonic watches came from William Wallace Dudley, a watchmaker as well as a Freemason whose company ceased production in 1925. Freemasonry has been around since the late 16th century and has been suggested as an outgrowth of the Templars. NOTES: During the early 20th century, there were several horological companies that made the Masonic Pocket Watches and apparently professionals who provided after market additions and/or alternations. SIZE: The case measures 50+ mm in diameter. Watch was probably last serviced (cleaned and oiled) in the 1970s. Tavannes watch value serial#
I assume that the first number is the movement serial number. There are two numbers on the case: 9117600 and 236. On back cover is stamped: “A la gloire du grand architecte de l’univers” 900 silver repousse style with all the Masonic symbols This watch has been part of a private collection for over 80 years and will be coming to market sometime in the future once the complete documentation is finished. This could be one of the most rare of the time. This particular watch with an exceptional case and dial that appears to have been assembled at the Tavannes factory is most unusual and rare. Many Masonic watches I have seen were modified after the watch was made or simply had a dial dropped into a case and movement. I have not been able to find any information about from the company or the internet about this particular watch. I would compare the rarity of this specialty watch to the Dudley Masonic Watch. is an original Masonic Tavannes pocket watch in an ornate silver “repousse style” silver case probably from the 1891 to 1920 era that appears to be in good running condition. If anyone knows anything more about this watch or can correct any assumptions I may have made, that would be appreciated. It is in remarkable condition for a watch of its age.
